It can be entirely demoralizing and confidence destroying, but that's the joy. Everyone who has played Darkest Dungeon can remember a time when a dungeon was going well until you walked into the wrong group of enemies who surprised you then triple critical hit your healer and caused your entire party to be killed. In the long run this one particular game means essentially nothing, I likely won't even remember it in five years, but right now, in this moment, it feels like this game means everything. For people who don't play video games, the feeling is akin to competing in a casual sport like pickup basketball. Granted, they aren't really important, but it doesn't feel that way to me. You probably want to ask me "How the heck does this have anything to do with what's happening now?" In many ways, nothing, the importance of a video game is by and large very low when compared to serious issues around the world like mass unemployment, starvation, and public health crises, but that's not really the point of video games.
